Elder Care in Madison FL
Taking a walk down memory lane can be a great activity for people of all ages, but also provide tremendous mental benefits for seniors. Just sitting down with an old photo album, flipping through the pictures and talking about the memories a person has about when those pictures were taken, what was going on that day, and even things that were going on “behind the scenes” will require mental stimulation and brain activity.
Every single event that occurred in a person’s life is stored in the brain. Even though most people have a tendency to forget about many things as they get older and experience new things on a regular basis, every memory is contained within the subconscious levels of the brain. Accessing them can be difficult at times. There could be any number of reasons why the brain limits access to certain memories, but a smell, a picture, and even a particular news item can conjure up a wide array of memories.
Watching old movies can do the same thing. There has been a lot of information produced in recent years that highlight the negative aspects of watching too much television or too many movies. That is certainly true as the actual act of watching TV or a movie is not stimulating the brain very much at all.
However, when seniors who rely on elder care are watching a movie they had seen many years ago, it could begin to open up new doors to memories from the past. They may start thinking about a person they saw the movie with, somebody they hadn’t seen or talked to in decades. That could cause them to remember many of the things they used to do, and that could then open up new outlets to other memories.
This year, consider watching some old movies with the senior who requires elderly home care and try tapping into memories from their past. It could provide them tremendous benefits.
