- Start mingling. Socializing with others will not only help prevent isolation and depression from happening, but can also help boost the elder’s memory.
- Quit smoking. Smokers are at a higher risk for memory loss and cognitive decline. If your loved one smokes, encourage them to talk to their doctor about programs that will make it easier for them to quit.
- Get plenty of sleep. Sleep is needed to help consolidate memories and store them so that they can be retrieved later. Without getting plenty of rest, the elder’s hippocampus will be unable to grow new neurons, which could cause memory problems and other physical ailments.
