Caregiver in Tallahassee FL
For writer Henry David Thoreau, simplicity was key. He is most known for his book, Walden, in which he describes the insight he gains from living a life of simplicity in a natural setting. In his honor, July 12th is dedicated as National Simplicity Day, a day for all Americans to reflect upon their lives and what is causing them stress and uneasiness. According to Thoreau, the way to fight off stress and negativity is to simplify life, but many Americans today may find it difficult to just retreat to the woods for long periods of time! Unfortunately, doctor’s appointments, cleaning, cooking, and other responsibilities don’t just go away when you feel you need a break. However, for family caregivers who often lead lives that are anything but simple, stress can find its way in when days get packed with responsibilities. So, while you may not be able to completely simplify your life, July 12th is a great day to try something that can add just a little bit more simplicity to your days. By starting a new habit of keeping things simple, you just may find that your attitude will become more positive and your stress will melt away. Here are a few ideas you can try:
Unplug at Scheduled Times
Do you find yourself glued to your smartphone, computer, or tablet? While these tools can certainly come in handy for a myriad of things, they definitely do not add simplicity to your life! Often, they are alerting you of new emails, texts, news, weather, and other information almost constantly. Even though these devices can be helpful at times, they can also contribute to your feelings of being overwhelmed. For this reason, try and take a step back from your devices at least once a day. Make one hour of your day an “unplugged” time where you do tasks without your phone on your person. Or, vow to leave your device out of your bedroom so that you can relax before bed.
The sight of clutter can cause anxiety and overwhelmed feelings in many people. In addition, clutter in your elderly loved one’s home can be unsafe. For these reasons, set aside some time on July 12th to get rid of the clutter in yours or your loved one’s home. You will be guaranteed to breathe easier once it is gone!
